Spain vs. Paraguay results FIFA World Cup 2010: Spain enters semi final

Now we saw the new football playing news Spain vs. Paraguay results FIFA World Cup 2010: Spain enters semi final

Spain vs. Paraguay results at the FIFA World Cup quarter finals at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday evening booked Spain to enter semi-finals for the first time in FIFA WC history. Thanks to Iker Casillas’s efforts in denying a penalty spot to Oscar Cardozo in the 59th minute of the game, the La Roja marched their way to see a semi-final game against Germany on 7th July in Durban. Spain achieved this victory in a hard way requiring a lone second half strike from David Villa to claim a 1-0 win over Paraguay here at Ellis Park.

Both the teams looked aggressive in the first half when Jonathan Santana provided an early wake up call by forcing Casillas into a save in

the opening minute. Paraguay disrupted every effort of Spain to settle and halted their crisp passing. Villa was seen struggling for space on the left flank while Nelson Valdez looked dangerous in Paraguay’s efforts in making their forays forwards.

On the half hour mark, Spain midfielder Xavi took charge of the game and placed a wonderful snap-shot from 25 yards that cleared the crossbar with goalkeeper Justo Villar scrambling. On the other hand even Paraguay could not make it when Santana narrowly failed to connect the header from Caudio Morel cross. Valdez then had the ball into the net when it was just four minutes before the half-time but sadly was disallowed for offside.

The second half geared momentum around the hour mark when Gerard Pique wrestled Osacr Cardozo to the ground as a corner. Cardozo was all set to give Paraguay a much needed lead from the penalty spot but goalkeeper Iker Casillas’s superb diving save to his left. Within one minute, Spain got a chance from penalty spot when Antolin Alcaraz of Paraguay bundled over Villa in the penalty area. Xabi Alonso buried his spot kick but Spain could not cherish the moment for long as the referee ordered a retake for encroachment. This time Villar dived low to his left and parried Alonso’s efforts but Paraguay scrambled it to safety.

It was David Villa from Spain who scored his game breaking goal that cracked Paraguayan defense seven minutes from time. Andres Iniesta hit a curling effort well blocked by Paraguayan Villar. Iniesta then made a diving run from midfield teeing up Pedra, whose shot hit Villar’s right hand spot before rebounding to Villa. It was his fifth goal and he became tournament’s leading scorer and saw Villa take an outright lead in the race for the Adidas Golden Boot. In the last minute Casillas saved his side with a double block from Santa Cruz and Barrios. Also Villa was denied by Villar in another counter attack.

But it was Casillas who denied Cardozo the penalty and led Spain to victory. Villa was quoted commenting on this 29 year old goal keeper from Spain, “Iker, as always, was faultless. We know just how many times he’s come to out rescue.”
